MICROSOFT HOLOLENS 2: Mixed-reality Glasses

Freedom of Movement: The head-mounted display HoloLens 2 by Microsoft is lightweight and comfortable to wear. It is adjustable to the head size and shape of the person working with it. The computer can be controlled by gesture and voice command. By means of eye, head and 6DoF tracking, movements are transferred from the real to the virtual world. This allows the user to act freely in VR space, for example, to walk toward a virtual object, circle it or bend over it. Hand tracking enables direct manipulation of holograms or images on the virtual screen by gestures, for example by drag-and-drop. To enable effective interaction with others as well as the virtual world, the HoloLens 2 provides a large field of view and high-resolution graphics. The lenses can be flipped up to switch immediately from mixed reality to the real world.

Real-world applications: The HoloLens 2 enables collaborative work at a new level. Application examples:

– Instead of colleagues working together remotely in front of a static screen, it is possible for the team to interact virtually using the mixed reality glasses

– The wearable computer enables fast and cost-saving remote maintenance and troubleshooting. Staff on site can be guided remotely by experts. Seeing what they see, experts can e.g. view critical information, make marks and walk the person on site through the process step by step.

– The HoloLens 2 enables virtual inspections. Seeing through the eyes of the person who wears the MR glasses makes it possible to guide an inspection process remotely.

Technical features and operating system: The holographic computer HoloLens 2 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 processor. It offers 4 GB of RAM and a storage capacity of 64 GB. The HoloLens 2 is equipped with the Windows Holographic operating system, which is based on the widely used Windows 11 platform. The HMD can be used independently without the need of a PC, both online and offline. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are integrated for wireless connectivity. The HoloLens 2 is equipped with a USB-C port. Iris recognition contributes to the safe use of the MR glasses.
